Is Donating a Laptop Tax Deductible?

Mark Kennan, Demand Media writes: Whether you've replaced your laptop or just don't need it any more, giving it to charity can give it second life. In fact, some charities specialize in accepting donations of laptops and other computers. As a reward for your generosity, Uncle Sam might let you take a tax deduction.

Qualified Charity

Only laptop donations to a qualified charity save you money on your taxes. Qualified organizations include nonprofit schools, nonprofit hospitals, religious organizations and other public charities like the United Way. No matter how well-intended or deserving, giving laptops away to other organizations or any individuals can't qualify. For example, you could deduct a laptop donated to the Boys and Girls Club, but if you gave it directly to a needy student, you couldn't claim a deduction.

Fair Market Value

Donating might not save you as much money on your taxes as you expect because you're limited to deducting only the fair market value of the computer. The IRS definition of "fair market value" is fairly broad: the price that a willing buyer and willing seller would agree to when both know all the facts and neither needs to make the trade. So, chances are that your deduction is going to be a lot less than your original purchase price.

Tax Reporting

When you donate the laptop to charity, get a receipt that shows the name of the organization, date of the donation and a description of what you donated. On your taxes, you muse itemize to claim the write off -- if you take the standard deduction, your laptop deduction won't help you. Since it's a property donation, it goes on line 17 of Schedule A. If your laptop is worth more than $500, you also need to fill out Form 8283.

Tax Savings

The tax savings from your laptop donation depend on your tax bracket. While being in a higher bracket is generally a bad thing because you're paying a higher tax rate, it actually means your deduction saves you more money. For example, if you're in the 15 percent bracket, a $500 deduction only saves you $75. However, if you're in the 35 percent bracket, that same deduction saves you $175.

Plan Fees

January 12, 2013
ECC Cloud,
Your monthly pricing only goes to 1000 transactions. I do that in a week. What is the pricing for more than 1000? And is it truly a fixed monthly price? The review below suggest that it is based on sales..that would not be cool.

eCC Cloud does support higher than 1000 transaction a month. Please contact our Sales team at (877) 753-5373 ext. 1 for more details.
eCC Cloud subscription is based on the number of transactions (orders posted to QuickBooks Online). It starts at $14.95/month for 1-100 transactions, and will automatically adjust the billing based on your usage.

This company agrees to take a percentage of your sales to provide you with this service instead of charging a monthly fee.
No, Thank you. Will wait for the product to be launched by another company.

Webgility does not charge a percentage transaction fee for your sales. Rather, we use a tiered pricing plan for eCC Cloud. This means that depending on your subscription you are allocated a certain number of transactions per month. Webgility will not take a percentage of your sales.

After a few setup fixes, the product works very well. (Just make sure you dot your I's and cross your Ts.) It pulls in everything we need from our Zen site and works well with QB online!

We use 3dcart and the integration took just minutes. It's super easy to use, I just login in the morning and download all our orders into QB while I have my morning coffee.
I highly recommend!

Great Solution For QBO

October 16, 2012
ECC cloud is the most complete solution that we found to transfer our online sales and invoices into Quickbooks Online. It allows me to verify each order before downloading and even allows me to edit invoices before I download to avoid miscellaneous errors. There are a couple of one feature in particular to that would be a great time saver if it existed:
1) the ability to assign a customer in ECC to an existing customer in QBO before downloading. This way, I can choose where the information is downloaded into QBO without having to wonder if the customer already exists or not or if for some reason the spelling is off in the customer name or company section.
2) the ability to post ignored sales and the ability to move invoices with errors to complete. More manual ability to switch sales from the different statuses: new orders, orders with errors, completed orders and ignored orders would be helpful.

Finally, A Bridge For QB Online To ECommerce!

October 1, 2012
Pros:
Connects with most of the major shopping carts. 23 different carts as of this writing.
Easy installation, connects with QB Online seamlessly.
Very reasonably priced starting at $14.95.
Cons:
Connections with shopping carts could be simpler. This is not necessarily an eCC issue, but I would love to see tighter integration with online stores, particularly in uploading php files for the store connector.
No shipping module available at this time.
Sales tax. This is a general issue and not necessarily an eCC problem, but as sales tax issues become more complex, shopping carts will need to be able to accommodate multiple state sales tax reporting.
Reviewer Info:
Jim Savage, Advanced Certified QuickBooks Pro Advisor specializing in eCommerce. Has conducted training for both the Sleeter Group and Scaling New Heights. Has assisted in the installation of dozens of shopping carts using eCC Desktop with a multitude of different shopping carts. This is my first time using eCC Cloud.
Review:
Since I have used the desktop version of eCC, I was very familiar with the process. Instead of connecting to my desktop version of QB, I instead provided my QB Online credentials and it connected right up. The first time sync with QB is very straight forward and takes full advantage of the Intuit App center synchronization process. I am very encouraged by the fact that there is now a bridge between QB Online and web stores and even though this is an early iteration of the product, it already seems like a very mature product and I look forward to seeing the future enhancements.
If someone is looking for a simple, easy integration with QuickBooks Online and their web store, this would be it. Obviously, if you have a very complicated online store with lots of product variants and pricing scenarios, this might not be the product for you. But, for the basic online business, this product will more than suffice. Basic knowledge of QuickBooks is needed, as you will need to know whether to bring transactions in as sales receipts or invoices and whether to create new customers or products not found in QuickBooks.
Having worked with the Webgility team over the past couple of years, I can attest to their great customer support. Support tickets are handled quickly and I have used their chat support extensively.

Hi Jim, nice review. I was wondering if there was any flexibility on the orders imported into Quickbooks based on their status, i.e., importing shipped orders only and not unconfirmed orders, etc. Please advise, thank you.

This App Is A Lifesaver - Can Only Get Better From Here

September 28, 2012
This app seamlessly integrated our BigCommerce shopping cart with our QuickBooks Online accounting system with minimal effort to set up. I would recommend it for any QBO users who have a shopping cart.
Pros
-Easy to set up (less than 15 minutes)
-Only intermediate IT skills required (paid set up is also available)
-Pays for itself immediately in payroll savings from data entry
-Simple and easy to use control panel online
Cons
-I think you have to choose either sales orders or invoices but not both (we sell by credit card and by net terms invoices online - there are workarounds but not a native solution) Looks like we will have to buy another subscription and have 2 apps running at the same time to process everything (If you don't sell products with both credit card (sales order) and invoice (net terms accounts) you will not have this issue.
-Sign up process and my subscriptions section of website is confusing but we got through it without having to call anyone
-Posting cannot be scheduled. It must be initiated online by clicking a button (Post to Quickbooks)
Wish list (This seems like an innovative company so I know this program will only improve from here)
-Add scheduling option - automated and hands free is always a great option
-Allow the choice of creating a sales order OR an invoice based on the criteria from the cart (i.e. payment method)
-Move ECC ship to the cloud so that both programs work together and we can get rid of the installed software (installed = costly IT support issues)
  • Automatically post sales to QuickBooks
  • Record customers and sync products
  • Monitor sales & integrate with multiple channels
