A Chance for Free Money Advice 'Financial Planning Days' May Be Coming to Your City

  • LINDSAY GELLMAN for the Wall St Journal writes:
  •  A free one-on-one financial-planning session might soon be coming to a city near you.
Financial Planning Days, a traveling program of free, private advice meetings with professional advisers, as well as free workshops on a range of personal-finance topics, are under way through Nov. 2. The program will be coming to San Francisco, Chicago, Phoenix, Elizabeth, N.J., and Milwaukee, among other cities.
You can find a schedule of dates and locations, and then register, at financialplanningdays.org. To get the most out of your visit, it's a good idea to do some homework before you go, says Kevin R. Keller, chief executive officer of the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, a co-sponsor of the event.
If your finances involve a family member, such as a spouse, child or parent, consider bringing him or her along, Mr. Keller says.
Next, make a list of questions you have, and gather relevant documents. For example, if you have a question about taking a tax deduction, bring along your income statements and tax forms.
You can expect to meet with an adviser for about 30 minutes, or longer if others aren't waiting, Mr. Keller says. If you need advice in a particular area, like retirement or debt counseling, you should look for an adviser specializing in those issues, although most advisers are equipped to discuss a range of topics, he says. Stations are set up far enough apart to allow for privacy, he adds.
The advice is strictly no-strings-attached, Mr. Keller says. Advisers are prohibited from selling products, passing out business cards or taking down names.

But adviser contact information will be provided to visitors so that you may follow up with a particular adviser if you so choose, he says.
